Sri Aravinda Sathajayanthi Government Degree College (S.A.S. Government Degree College), Narayanapuram is located between serene Krishna and Godavari rivers on the Chennai- Kolkata National Highway No.16, in West Godavari District of Andhra Pradesh state. The college was established during 1972-73 by a trust – namely, ”Sri Chintalapati Bapiraju Dharma Samstha,” Chinanindrakolanu, West Godavari District, Andhra Pradesh in order to cater the educational needs of the students in the region.
At times when the masses of the region were engulfed in abject poverty with gross illiteracy rate and massive educational backwardness, the founder of the trust Sri Chintalapati Varaprasada Murthy Raju who was a Gandhian, freedom fighter, Member of Legislative Assembly and minister , had put in relentless efforts to make the poverty--free region through education. His ingenious efforts resulted in establishment of five Junior colleges, five degree colleges and three oriental colleges in West Godavari District, Sri Aravinda Sathajayanthi Government Degree College being one amongst them.
Since its inception, it carved out a niche for itself in imparting quality higher education in bachelor degree to the students who hail from rural and underprivileged sections of the region.
The college has many feathers in its cap in terms of possessing many a student support wing such as Jawahar Knowledge Centre (JKC), Library, well equipped gymnasium, scientific laboratories, e-class room and virtual class room for delivery of ICT based instruction. In addition, N.S.S for organizing community outreach programmes, Women Empowerment Cell for empowering and redressing grievances of the women students, a host of clubs such as Red Ribbon Club, Physics club, Chemistry club. Furthermore, an association formed for carrying out humanitarian and social responsibility activities in the name of Aravinda College Helping Hands Association (ACHHA). All those facilities provided a platform for the student community to acquire globally competitive skills.
The college is widely known as hub for games and sports. The college, with its sprawling 5.77 acres of playground, is a natural choice for hosting various sports and games at state and national levels by various state and national agencies.
The college is teeming with 14 teaching staff members with four Doctorates, four M.Phil holders with average teaching experience of 10 years in degree colleges.
Almost all students in the college are economically backward with parental income ranging from 40000 – 60000 per annum.
Many of the alumni of the college are well settled in Government as well as private sector jobs.
Jawahar Knowledge Centre (JKC) was established in the college during 2015-16 by the Commissionerate of the Collegiate Education, Vijayawada for imparting training in employable skills. Around 32 of this college were placed in various companies through this centre.
The college is teeming with 5761books. Of them, text books, reference books, competitive examinations etc.
The college adopts learner- centric pedagogy through co-curricular and extra-curricular activities such as conduct of science exhibitions, sports and games competitions, and educational tours besides exposing students to the lectures of eminent experts in various faculties.
The teaching –learning process was fortified by one Virtual Class Room and one e- class room.
The college is equipped with sufficient scientific equipment in five laboratories in the subjects of Botany, Chemistry Computer Science, Physics and Zoology.
The Department of Physical Education has gymnasium with latest equipment procured for the needs of the studying in the college.
The total number of sanctioned teaching posts is 16 out of which 8 are working as permanent teaching staff.
